Everything about Kyoto Ichijoji, the ramen district, by the Ramen Connoisseur

Ichijoji in Kyoto is seen as a quiet place just outside the busy city, however, it is one of Kyoto’s prominent area for famous sites.

For example, there’s “Ichijo Sagari Matsu”, which used to be the point of reference for the people travelling between Oumi and Kyoto.

It has a relation with the legendary swordsman, Miyamoto Musashi, and in Kyoto it is said to be the stage of the battle between Miyamoto Musashi and Yoshida Dojo, a well-known martial art group who was the instructor of Muromachi Shogun.

Nowadays, it is a little fancy area with many general good shops, book shops, cake shops, bakeries, cafes… and so on.

Today’s theme, “Kyoto Ichijoji Ramen District” is one of the many famous area.

There’s so many Ramen battlegrounds all around Japan, and that in Kyoto is here, Ichijoji.

We’ll introduce those Ramen restaurants in the neighbour of Ichijoji, Kyoto’s Ramen District.

Main characteristic is the thick soup which transcends the normal “thickness”, like a pottage.

It’s not like the pork based thick soup from Tenkaippin or Muteppou, but Gokkei is chicken based thick soup.

The soup is very clear as it is rated in line with crispy and dry, but once you have a little taste, the umami flavour explodes in your mouth.

The soup is very rich seafood and pork based, and the noodle is on the tough side.

This restaurant is so called “Jirou Kei (style)” (a style used for Ramen with thick noodles, and huge amount of stir fry on top of the Ramen) surely for those hungry students around the area.

You of course have to go “Zenmashi” (adding extra of every topping)!

The default menu here is Tonkotsu Shoyu (Pork soy based soup), but surprisingly mild.

It is said to be Kyoto’s “Iekei Ramen” (a style of Ramen with thick Pork and soy based soup, and fat and straight noodle).

This restaurant makes Miso Ramen, which is very rare in the Kansai area.

Especially the Shiro Miso Ramen (White miso) has some sort of richness and lightly sweet soup is somewhat a nostalgic taste. You’ll remember your local area far away from here.
